A Community Cultural Wealth Approach in These Urgent Times

Tara J. Yosso

Saturday, October 1, 2:00 PM-3:00 PM

Prof. Yosso’s plenary talk will overview her community cultural wealth model, which has been received nationally and internationally as a paradigm shift for the ways we have traditionally thought about schooling structures, practices, and discourse. She will offer timely insights for those asking questions about how a community cultural wealth lens can inform our approach to our curriculum, our class environment, and the relationships we build within the school community--and how that knowledge influences the structures and processes of the school itself. Her plenary will ask us to consider the urgency of fostering a critical historical perspective of the communities we aim to serve and of drawing on the ingenuity and courage of those who have come before us in the struggle for justice.

Tara J. Yosso

Tara J. Yosso, a first generation college student, earned at UCLA a BA in Social Psychology of Education with an Emphasis in Chicana/o Studies and a PhD in Urban Schooling. Now a Professor in the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Riverside, her work examines the ways People of Color utilize community cultural wealth to survive and resist racism and other forms of subordination. Her research is extensively cited within and beyond education. For example, her article,  Whose Culture has Capital? A Critical Race Theory Discussion of Community Cultural Wealth, has become the top cited article in Race Ethnicity and Education since its publication in 2005—with almost 9,000 citations. The American Educational Studies Association recognized her book, Critical Race Counterstories along the Chicana/Chicano Educational Pipeline (Routledge) with a 2008 Critics‘ Choice Book Award.

Dr. Yosso's publisher, Taylor and Francis, has donated several copies of her book as door prizes and will provide discounts on future book orders.
